MICRONATIONAL HISTORY 101

Micronations are frequently expressions of political protest, personal entertainment, theoretical experimentation, artistic expression, and sometimes they are even a conduit for illegal activity. Some micronations issue passports, or have flags, postage stamps, coins and medals.

This is not simply a list of micronations, but some of the most significant micronations are listed here simply because of the significant things they have developed, discovered, invented, or achieved. The compiler of this brief on micronational history has included micronations and their contributions only if they are Fifth and Sixth World nations, i.e. tiny nations that may or may not have a territory. Large Fourth World nations (we know today that there are also tiny Fourth World nations), i.e. territorially large nations that are sometimes included in other lists as "micronations", have not been generally included in this brief, but some may be mentioned, nonetheless, if they are a real part of micronational history — if their achievement is largely independent of the Official World.

Words like 'micronation', 'micronational', and 'micronationalist' are often used like put-downs by people living in the so-called real world (really a catchphrase for 'Official World'), but you must understand that these words are exonyms — names given to a group or category of people by persons other than the people referenced to — and endonyms — names used by a group or category of people to refer to themselves or their language — such as 'Fifth World nation', 'Fifth Worldish', and 'Fifth Worlder' also exist in Fifth World English (lexicon).

MICRONATIONAL FIRSTS

DATE MICRONATIONAL FIRST
Circa 1680-1947 The world's oldest and longest living micronation was probably the Indian princely state of Pudukkottai. From the 6th to the 14th century AD, Pudukkottai was successively ruled by the Pallavas, the Cholas, and the Pandyas. When the Pandya kingdom was conquered by Malik Kafur, Pudukkottai came under the rule of Muslim sultans, who held power for about 50 years before being vanquished by the Vijayanagar kings. When the Vijayanagar kingdom disintegrated, Raghunatha Kilavan wrested the country from them in 1680, and appointed Raghunatha Tondaiman, his brother-in-law, as viceroy. Pudukkottai thus came under the rule of the Madurai Nayak Dynasty. After the death of Raghunatha Kilavan, Raghunatha Tondaiman became the ruler of Pudukottai. Thus the Thondaiman Dynasty took root and flourished. The princely state of Pudukottai was created by Raghunatha (Raya) Tondaiman. In later centuries the Thondaiman rulers, while nominally being feudatories of the Ramnad state, often pursued an independent foreign policy (just like any micronation would do today), a trend common in all parts of India at that time. The kingdom initially did not have fixed boundaries, and was called "Thondaiman country" (after the Thondaiman rulers) until the end of 18th century. The kingdom started to have fixed boundaries in the early 19th century. It extended for 52 miles from east to west and 41 miles from north to south, and encompassed an area of 1,178 square miles. The Thondaimans provided military aid to the British and the Nawabs of Arcot in the 1752 siege of Tiruchirapally, against Haidar Ali and Tippu Sultan, and finally against the Palaiyakkarars. This act by the Thondaiman rulers spared the kingdom from being assigned zamindari status, and Pudukottai was instead assigned as a Princely State (also called Native or Indian State). Marthanda Bhairava Tondaiman declared, in 1888, that Pudukkottai had become an independent kingdom, and in 1889 issued an Amman cash coin (Amman kasu). That was the only coin ever issued by the Kingdom of Pudukkottai. Pudukkottai remained the only princely kingdom to maintain its independence in the whole of Tamil Nadu. The kingdom eventually acceded to the independent Dominion of India in August 1947, and merged with the Madras state in the following year. Rajagopala Tondaiman, ninth and last ruler of the princely state of Pudukkottai, died in 1997 at the age of 75.
Circa 1865 World's first extant micronation starts in 1865 when Matthew Shiell Dowdy, a rich Irishman resident of Montserrat, buys the island of Redonda, and with tacit consent from Victoria, Queen of England, becomes the first King of Redonda. In 1880 the crown passed to the son, Matthew Philipps Shiell, who was incoronated by the Methodist Bishop of Antigua with the name of Felipe I. He reigned until 1947. Felipe became a famous writer, and conceded many titles, especially for cultural and literary merits. His successor was John Gawsworth, who under the name of King Juan I was monarch of the island until 1967. After 1967 at least two parallel claims to the Kingdom of Redonda exist (Arthur John Roberts, 1967-1989, styled as King Juan II; and Giancarlo Ezio Noferi, styled as HRH Giancarlo Ezio I of Montedoglio, 1967-). Today there are at least four living claimants.
Circa 1940 The first apparent reference in French to the word micronation in book form appears in Bibliothèque historique vaudoise, Volume 67, by the Société historique vaudoise, Société académique vaudoise: "La micronation vaudoise forme done un ensemble politique et culturel."
Circa 1943 The first apparent reference in English to the word micronation in book form appears in The battle for Buenos Aires, by Saxtone E. Bradford (New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company): "Careful groundwork had given Germany a highly unified micronation within the boundaries of Argentina in many ways better prepared and better organized than . . ." The first reference in English to the word micronations in a popular book appears in the 1978 edition of The People's Almanac #2, where David Wallechinsky and Irving Wallace write: "Established in 1972 by a declaration of sovereignty by a group of Californians, the Republic of Minerva has more claim to authenticity than most micronations because it actually has some land, although it disappears at high tide. The republic consists of two coral reefs 17 miles apart in the South Pacific Ocean some 3,400 miles southwest of Honolulu and 915 miles northeast of Auckland, New Zealand."
26/10/1967 The earliest apparent instance of use of the word micro-nation in English in journalistic form appears to be in the 26 October 1967 edition of Australian newspaper The Age, on page 5, under the article "A micro-nation", which mentions the now independent country of Nauru. The first apparent instance of use of the word micronation in English in journalism in its modern form, i.e. without a hyphen, is in the 8 October 1973 Time magazine article "TOURISM: Red into Black", where the word is first mentioned in the phrase, "As S.B.M. goes, so goes the micronation, which is made up of about 4,000 Monegasques and 25,000 resident foreigners." S.B.M., by the way, is a reference to Société des Bains de Mer SA, or the Société Anonyme des Bains de Mer et du Cercle des Etrangers à Monaco, a Monaco-based holding company primarily engaged in the operations in two sectors: games and hotel business.

01/04/1973 On April Fools' Day in 1973, John Lennon and Yoko Ono announced the birth of Nutopia, the world's first country where all people are ambassadors. Nutopia was described as "a conceptual country" with no boundaries and "no laws other than cosmic." At the time, Mr. Lennon was being threatened with deportation because of a 1968 marijuana conviction in Britain. As Nutopian ambassadors, Mr. and Ms. Lennon asked for diplomatic immunity and United Nations recognition, and they gave "One White Street" as the embassy address. Neither of them ever lived at that address.
Circa 1976 Peter Townsend becomes the world's first man to inherit an embassy when he moves into a four-story town house at "One White Street" in TriBeCa. Within days he started receiving mail addressed to "John Lennon and Yoko Ono, c/o Nutopian Embassy", and the mail didn't stop coming until a few years after Mr. Lennon was shot and killed (New York Times article).
23/04/1982 World's first 'Fifth World' country is born, the Conch Republic. The Conch Republic was born in response to a United States Border blockade of the Florida Keys. Since the United States Government insisted on treating the Keys like a foreign country; Key West Mayor Dennis Wardlow seceded from the Union, declared war, surrendered, and demanded foreign aid. Its Secretary General Sir Peter Anderson claims that "we exist as a 'State of Mind', and aspire only to bring more Warmth, Humor and Respect to a planet we find in sore need of all three."

ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENTS

DATE MICRONATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT
18/01/2010 The article "Fifth World agriculture is the wave of the future" is published. It shows that the certified organic farming we often see today is really Fourth World in scale and philosophy, and through Fourth World agriculture it is impossible to grow food sustainably, because there simply aren't enough farmers to have a small, local, organic farm everywhere. The only solution to the problem of industrial agriculture, and to the problem of unsustainability of a Fourth World agricultural model, is that a lot more people have to grow food, both for sale and at home. The only solution is Fifth World agriculture, i.e. do-it-yourself (DIY) agriculture, where "the producer(s) and the consumer(s) are the same person(s)".
02/04/2010 News of UK government's proposal to turn the Chagos Archipelago into protected area, and the backing of the decision by several environmental and science bodies shows that not only Fourth World agriculture is unsustainable, but also Fourth World environmentalism, the kind that is massive in size, but microscopic in terms of its respect for human rights. Fourth World environmentalism also proves to be unsustainable, the kind that piggybacks on governments and intergovernmental organisations just like the most despicable bank, corporation, or protected interest group; the kind that turns weekend fishermen into people who now ridiculously need a licence for a hobby, a licence which is also a tax in disguise which supports criminal organisations such as the United Nations; the kind which place the rights of professional environmentalists ahead of the human rights of indigenous peoples like Chagossians, who will now be required a permit for subsistence fishing, all while destructive commercial fishing goes on in places like the Galápagos Islands, and right inside the so-called "nature reserves". The idea that Fourth World environmentalism also needs to be replaced by Fifth World environmentalism, DIY environmentalism, marks the birth of micronational environmentalism, at least as a realistic and unique concept.

04/09/1971 Inhabitants of neighbourhoods surrounding Christiania brake down the fence to take over parts of the unused area as a playground for their children. Although the takeover was not necessarily an organised one, some claim it happened as a protest against the Danish government. On 26 September 1971, Christiania was declared open by Jacob Ludvigsen, a well-known provo and journalist who published a magazine called Hovedbladet intended for, and successfully distributed to, mostly young people. In the paper, Ludvigsen wrote an article which widely announced the proclamation of the free town, and the headline was, "Civilians conquered the 'forbidden city' of the military". Ludvigsen also became the co-author of Christiania's mission statement, which says, "The objective of Christiania is to create a self-governing society whereby each and every individual holds themselves responsible over the wellbeing of the entire community. Our society is to be economically self-sustaining and, as such, our aspiration is to be steadfast in our conviction that psychological and physical destitution can be averted." The spirit of Christiania quickly developed into one of the hippie movement, the squatter movement, collectivism and anarchism, in contrast to the site's previous military use.

MICRONATIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS

The compiler of this brief on micronational history, the HMRD Cesidio Tallini, is not an historian by profession or college degree, nor has he declared himself "the sole authority on all things micronational."

This is a brief compilation of significant micronational things we have knowledge of. If you wish to help update this history with another objectively relevant entry, please don't pontificate; please don't assume you are innocent, and the author of this history is guilty; gather documentation which shows evidence of your micronational history claim; and contact the compiler through his contact form at http://kontactr.com/user/hmrdct.

A little about the ideas that are the underpinning of this brief on micronational history.

My view is that macronationalism has nothing to do with the Official World, or the First, Second, and Third World. Macronationalism is Fourth World phenomena.

Micronationalism, on the other hand, is Fifth and Sixth World phenomena.

Although this history may mention, when appropriate, an actual macronation, its emphasis is on the history of micronations.

As my article "The con game of the de jure states" states:
Furthermore:
You would think this would be enough to bring macronations and micronations together, but that is not the case.

Macronations can be of the secessionist and irredentist variety. They can even enjoy some de jure or de facto recognition.

Micronations can also be secessionist and irredentist, but unlike macronations, they can also be virtual. Micronations can also enjoy some de jure or de facto recognition, although this is very rare.

A more recent article of mine, "Micronations: communities without strangers", adds additional detail about my thinking:
It is clear that my bias is in favour of Fifth Worldism or micronationalism, which I believe provides a better solution to many different kinds of problems.

It should also be clear that this is a history that not everyone will agree with, because it is about significant micronational contributions, not irrelevant or common contributions. The author also believes that true micronationalism cannot be Montevideo-centric. True micronationalism is beyond territorial micronationalism (more Fourth-Worldish than Fifth-Worldish), and this makes true micronationalism a more plausible, and even a more legal form of micronationalism.

True micronationalism is not about making other peoples' land your own land (colonialism and imperialism at its worst), but more about building land from thin air!

A true micronationalist is a member of the ultimate race, the Indigo race. He does not run his life with other peoples' limitations, but laughs at them, showing how everybody else is inferior, because they are not genetically inferior, but spiritually inferior.
